How do we see ourselves in the plants around us?

What happens that day

Sit for a studio portrait. We print it right there. Then you cut into it, layer it, and build a collage with images of native plant photography. Last, you fill out our Plant Story Card for our research, in your own words: the plant you carry, and why.

You leave with all three, the printed portrait, the finished collage, and the card. We photograph the card first, with your permission.

Come as you are

Everyday clothes, traditional dress, or regalia, all of it belongs in the room. If you'd rather not be photographed, bring a photo of a relative and collage that instead.

There's a community potluck. Bring a dish if you'd like to.

Where the work goes

With your permission, each piece is photographed, and those photographs inform a series of tapestries and printed fabric designed by Essentials Creative. Those tapestries come back to this community at the Austin Powwow and Native American Heritage Festival on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at the Travis County Expo Center.

Nothing is photographed without your say-so, and you take your own work home the same day.

Part of Plant Story Cards

This workshop is part of Plant Story Cards, an ongoing project pairing Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian plant knowledge with community-collected stories.

Save your spot

RSVP helps us plan materials and food. It isn't a gate — walk-ins are welcome until the room is full.
