"Yanaguana Garden" is a captivating site-specific light installation created by Essentials Creative for Luminaria 2023, San Antonio's premier contemporary arts festival. This immersive public artwork transforms the historic arches of Hemisfair's Yanaguana Garden with illuminated tapestries that celebrate indigenous heritage and local ecosystems.
Drawing inspiration from the Payaya people's rich oral traditions and San Antonio's origin myths, the installation brings to life the ancient story of Yanaguana—the "land of refreshing waters." The artwork visualizes sacred narratives including the mythical encounter between a waterbird and blue panther that created the San Antonio River, depicted in a pattern resembling the Eridanus constellation.
Three spectacular illuminated tapestries comprise this installation:
Yanaguana Garden: Moon, Blue Panther, and Texas Wild Rice - 30"x40" double-sided tapestry combining digital printing on linen with hand-applied acrylic paint
Payaya People: Sun, Waterbird, and Prickly Pear - 30"x40" double-sided tapestry blending traditional and digital techniques
Land of the Spirit Waters: Stars, Alligator Gar, and Purple Coneflower - 30"x40" double-sided tapestry featuring celestial elements and native species
The installation highlights indigenous Texas flora and fauna including:
Endangered Texas Wild Rice
Prickly pear cactus
Purple coneflower
Trumpet vine and its pollinator moths
Alligator gar
Native birds
Strategically illuminated at night, these tapestries create a mystical ambiance that transforms Yanaguana Garden into an immersive storytelling environment, honoring both the land's indigenous heritage and contemporary San Antonio culture.
